Interesting set of surveys that set out a few findings:
A majority of Americans think that AI and robots should be carefully managed; they trust universities, the military, and tech companies to build AI; but they trust tech and non-government organisations over government organisations to manage AI.
Perhaps this isn’t surprising given the culture of USA, which is, by and large, sceptical of big government and regulation. Given the trust that is being placed in tech companies, however, the impetus is even greater to ensure AI is developed ethically. The fear here is that an ethics washing or profit-over-people mentality will ultimately damage the trust that tech companies currently enjoy, and ultimately need to continue enjoying for the future of their own industry.
