Tokyo-based startup, Vaak, has developed and released an AI software that uses facial and behavioural analysis to predict shoplifting.
Some moral questions are identified in this article:
- Whether the shop has the legal or moral right to perform police-like functions;
- Whether the system will repeat the mistakes of other facial-analysis systems by discriminating along gender or racial lines;
- Issues of consent, especially since people need to use shops, this might mean any consent fails to be meaningful; and
- Rights over the personal data generated and concerns over how that data is used, stored, or shared.
