Hetan Shah explores the techlash that has followed the Cambridge Analytica scandal and asks what can be done to restore trustworthiness. The protection of privacy; fake news, misinformation, and click bait; micro targeted political advertising; and growing data monopolies are the concerns identified that underlie the techlash.
The solution offered is to turn tech companies from data owners to data stewards: allowing them a fixed time period of rights to use the data, whilst opening up the (anonymised) data for research purposes.
